David G Anderson, Bethune-Thompson House (1784)
To whom it may concern, In 1996, as a member of the Board of Stewards of St Andrews United Church in Williamstown, Ontario, we made a decision to retain the services of Keith Kennedy, then of Brockville, to restore the masonry fabric of our stone church.
This is the mother church of Presbyterianism in Ontario, the present stone structure dating from 1912. Over that time it had suffered from parging with Portland cement over the original soft lime mortar and other well-meant but inappropriate masonry work.
Keith Kennedy quoted our board on an entire reworking of all mortared joints in the structure. He completed the work ahead of time and within budget as well as handling exceptional details in an open and professional manner. The result was to the entire satisfaction of our board and continues to be so.
My competence in the matter is based on my degree in chemistry, coupled with a lifelong dedication to the principles of heritage conservation. I am a past president of the Glengarry Historical Society, a director of the Friends of the Ruins of St Raphaels ( a National Historic Site) and a longtime tenant of the Bethune Thompson House (also a National Historic Site and owned by the Ontario Heritage Foundation).
